Welcome to the Tropical Island Course! My name is Diogo Guerreiro and I’m going to be your instructor in this course. The TRISC is the result of more than 4 years of planning, testing, and refining a specific methodology that simplifies the learning process and gives you the instruments to leverage the full potential of Houdini!
I developed the Tropical Island Course to share with you every single tool and workflow that has been essential in my own process of learning Houdini and creating the art that I want to make.
The purpose of this course is very straight forward: to provide artists with practical knowledge, so they can access and understand all tools related to environment creation inside Houdini, so they will be free to translate their ideas into real, high standard projects.
How is the TRISC different?
You'll learn many tools that will help you
create the most diverse high-end Environments.
TRISC is a special course. We are a premium course with an accessible price.
We spent a lot of time optimizing our course so you don´t waste yours. Every recorded minute is valuable information. When we do a repetitive task, we choose different methods every time so you learn more ways of accomplishing tasks in Houdini. We record our classes in 4K, so you receive a very sharp and clear image. Also, we choose themes that will add a lot to your demo reel.
We create our courses with an obsession for quality and with purpose, so you will learn how to become a better CG artist while having a lot of fun.
What exactly is in this course?
The 22 lessons are distributed in 8 core modules that make up the backbone of the course and 2 bonus: The Redshift Ocean Plugin + Fog HDA.
Module 1 - Introduction
Intro to the project and reference files.
Module 2 - Creation of the background islands
We will use procedural height field tools to create as many islands as we want in the background. This is a great introduction to terrain tools inside Houdini.
Module 3 - Foreground/hero island
We will start to work in our hero island, in the foreground. For this island, we will use both procedural and nonprocedural workflows. We will learn how to create cliffs, soft mountains, beaches and prepare the asset for texturing later on.
Module 4 - Lighting and shading
We will cover the light setup, texturing, and shading of our environment. We will go through procedural masks for defining texture areas for different areas. You will learn how to use the tri-planar method in Redshift and how to set an atmosphere in your environment.
Module 5 - Rocks Scattering
We will use the Boolean node and intersection analysis to scatter rocks around our island. You will learn some advanced scattering techniques to populate the terrain with rocks, both under and above the water.
Module 6 - Plants Scattering
We will scatter some plants in our hero island using Houdini procedural and nonprocedural workflows. You will learn all tools provided by the HF scatter node and will be able to populate large environments with speed, efficiency, and total control.
Module 7 - HDA tool for Oceans in Redshift
We will cover the HDA tool for Oceans using Redshift. In this course, you receive the custom CGimagine Ocean Plugin HDA for rendering oceans very fast and with lots of control. This tool takes care of tiling, uvs, displacement, and texturing, all in one single node.
Module 8 - Final adjustments and shots render
In this chapter, we will make the final adjustments for our shots. You will learn how to set a camera path with look at constraints, set up high-quality optimizations for redshift, and finally the lighting methods for a very realistic scene.
“Is this course right for me?”
The Topical Island course has been designed to give you the tools, the structure, and the methodology to learn from scratch how to create an amazing photorealistic environment. However, you'll have to put in the time and work to see the results.

Frequently Asked Questions
What software do I need to join this course?
In order to do everything that we do in the course, you need the Houdini Indie (if you want to use Redshift Render). Although, with the Apprentice version you can follow along most parts.
How long do I have to complete this course?
In short, if you watch one module every single day (and practice the workflows), you can complete the course in 2 weeks. One of the key aspects of the methodology of the course is the ability to go at your own pace (everyone learns differently). So there is no rush and you can fit the course within your schedule.
What about feedback or answering questions?
